âWaymo Expands to 10 Cities as Robotaxi Rollout Acceleratesâđ¨
Alphabet subsidiary Waymo announced today that its fully driverless ride-hailing service is expanding to four new U.S. cities: Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Orlando.
The rollout will begin with âselect ridersâ who have downloaded the Waymo app in those cities. Invitations will go out on a rolling basis before the service opens to the general public later this year.
With this expansion, Waymoâs total service footprint now spans 10 cities â primarily concentrated in California and across the Sun Belt â effectively doubling its operational reach in just a few months.
Why It Matters
Waymo has long been considered the frontrunner in autonomous driving technology, and this expansion signals growing confidence in both its technology and regulatory positioning. Scaling across major metro areas like Houston and Dallas suggests the company is moving beyond pilot programs and toward broader commercial adoption.
For Alphabet investors, Waymo represents one of the companyâs most ambitious long-term bets. While still not a major revenue driver compared to search or cloud, robotaxis could become a meaningful business line if adoption continues to expand at this pace.
The key question now:
Can Waymo scale efficiently â and profitably â as competition in autonomous vehicles intensifies?
