āOpenAI Faced Internal Concerns Over Planned āAdult Modeā for ChatGPTā šØšØšØ
OpenAI reportedly faced serious internal backlash over plans to introduce an āadult modeā for ChatGPT that would allow the AI chatbot to generate erotic content, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
The proposal sparked alarm within the company, particularly after previous safety incidents in which users allegedly used the chatbot during conversations about suicide or violent behavior.
Critics inside the company warned that expanding the platform into explicit content could worsen emotional dependence some users develop with AI systems.
One major concern centered on the chatbotās age estimation system, which the report says incorrectly classified minors as adults about 12% of the time, potentially allowing underage users to access restricted features.
Members of OpenAIās mental health advisory council were reportedly unanimous in opposing the rollout, with some experts warning the feature could unintentionally create what they described as a āsexy suicide coachā if vulnerable users formed unhealthy relationships with the chatbot.
Amid the backlash and safety concerns, OpenAI recently decided to delay the adult mode feature, saying it would instead prioritize improvements to other products and safeguards.
The debate highlights the growing challenge tech companies face as AI systems become more advanced and widely used, raising difficult questions about safety, ethics, and user well-being.
