āAirfare Surge Incoming: United CEO Warns Prices May Jump Another 20%ā šØšØšØ
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby says travelers should brace for even higher ticket prices, warning that airfares may need to rise another 20% just for the airline to break even if fuel costs stay elevated.
Fares have already climbed 15ā20% in recent weeks, but Kirby says that only covers about half of the surge in fuel-related expenses. With jet fuel prices topping $4 and oil potentially reaching as high as $175 per barrel, the pressure on airlines is intensifying.
Despite the looming price hikes, demand isnāt slowing down. Kirby noted that 2026 has already seen the strongest booking weeks in the companyās history, signaling that travelers are still willing to pay upāfor now.
With airlines no longer heavily hedging fuel, theyāre more exposed to oil price swings, meaning passengers could continue to feel the impact in the form of rising ticket costs.
Bottom line: as long as fuel stays high, cheaper flights may be a thing of the past.
