āTesla Expands Robotaxi Service, But Limited Fleet Raises Questionsā šØšØšØ
Tesla is pushing forward with its Robotaxi rollout, expanding the service to Dallas and Houston alongside existing operations in Austin and the Bay Area. Videos shared by the company show driverless Model Y vehicles navigating city streets, signaling progress in its autonomous driving ambitions.
However, early data suggests the expansion is more symbolic than scalableāfor now. Reports indicate there may be just one driverless vehicle operating in each of the newly added cities, making the service extremely difficult to access. Coverage is also limited, spanning only about 30 square miles in Dallas and 25 in Houstonājust a small portion of each cityās total footprint.
While itās common for autonomous ride services to launch in controlled, limited environments before scaling, Teslaās pace has drawn attention. In Austin, the service debuted with around 10 vehicles last June and has grown to roughly 45 over the past year. Despite earlier expectations of fully autonomous operation, most of those cars still include a human safety monitor in the passenger seat.
The Bay Area tells a similar story. Tesla operates a larger fleet thereāestimated at around 500 vehiclesābut the service often struggles with availability. Users frequently encounter āhigh demandā messages, suggesting supply still falls short of interest.
Tesla has previously stated plans to expand Robotaxi service to nine markets, including Miami and Phoenix, by the first half of 2026. With that deadline approaching, the company faces increasing pressure to accelerate deployment and prove its autonomous technology can scale effectively.
As Tesla doubles down on self-driving as a cornerstone of its future, the gap between vision and real-world execution remains under close scrutiny.
