āAST SpaceMobile Stock Slides After BlueBird 7 Orbit Failureā šØ
AST SpaceMobile shares fell sharply in premarket trading after the company revealed its BlueBird 7 satellite was placed into an incorrect orbit following its launch aboard Blue Originās New Glenn rocket. The satellite, which successfully separated and powered on, was deployed at an altitude too low to sustain operations and will now be de-orbited.
While the setback marks a technical failure, AST SpaceMobile noted that the cost of the satellite is expected to be covered by insurance, limiting the immediate financial damage. Still, the incident raises concerns as the company races to build out its ambitious space-based cellular network.
BlueBird 7, launched on April 19, would have been the companyās eighth satellite in low-Earth orbit. AST SpaceMobile is aiming to deploy around 45 satellites by the end of the year as it works toward delivering global 5G connectivity from space. Its strategy differs from competitors like SpaceXās Starlink, which relies on thousands of smaller satellites. Instead, ASTS is betting on a smaller number of larger, more advanced satellites designed to capture signals more efficiently.
The issue has been attributed to the upper stage of Blue Originās New Glenn rocket, which placed the satellite into a lower-than-planned orbit. Despite the setback, the mission did achieve a milestone for Blue Origin, which successfully reused a New Glenn rocket for the first timeāan important step in its effort to compete with SpaceX in the reusable launch market.
The broader space race continues to intensify. SpaceX currently dominates with thousands of satellites already deployed, while companies like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon are ramping up their own efforts. Amazon recently announced plans to acquire Globalstar as it prepares to enter the direct-to-device satellite connectivity market by 2028.
As competition grows and timelines tighten, execution will be critical. For AST SpaceMobile, this latest hiccup highlights both the risks and the high stakes involved in building the next generation of global communications infrastructure.
