âCorning Stock Surges as Nvidia Bets $500M on AI Fiber Expansionâ đ¨đ¨đ¨
Shares of Corning jumped sharply after Nvidia announced a $500 million investment in the fiber-optics giant, signaling growing demand for infrastructure powering the AI boom.
The deal gives Nvidia the right to purchase up to 18 million Corning shares and is part of a broader multiyear partnership aimed at scaling U.S.-based optical connectivity. Corning plans to increase its manufacturing capacity tenfold and boost fiber production by more than 50% to meet surging demand from AI data center buildouts.
The investment is structured through two types of warrants. Nvidia secured âpre-fundedâ warrants tied to 3 million shares, representing most of the initial $500 million. It also received âtraditionalâ warrants for an additional 15 million shares at $180, allowing the chipmaker to benefit if Corningâs stock continues to rise over the next three years.
If fully exercised, the deal could grow significantly larger, with CEO Jensen Huang potentially committing far more capital over time.
While smaller upfront than Nvidiaâs recent multibillion-dollar investments in Marvell Technology, Coherent, and Lumentum, the Corning partnership could ultimately rival or exceed those deals as AI infrastructure demand accelerates.
The move underscores a broader trend: as artificial intelligence scales, the race to build the physical backboneâfiber, connectivity, and data centersâis becoming just as critical as the chips themselves.
