“Moderna Surges as Investors Bet on Potential Hantavirus Vaccine” 🚨🚨🚨
Shares of MRNA soared after Moderna revealed it is actively researching a potential vaccine for hantavirus, a rare but highly dangerous virus that recently made headlines following an outbreak aboard an Atlantic cruise ship.
The biotech company told Bloomberg it has been studying hantavirus vaccines in partnership with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and Korea University’s Vaccine Innovation Center. The research reportedly began before the recent outbreak, which has killed three people and infected several others.
Investor excitement pushed Moderna stock nearly 12% higher Friday, with shares continuing to climb in Monday trading. The surge reflects growing speculation that Moderna could once again play a major role in responding to an emerging global health threat, similar to its rapid development of a COVID-19 vaccine in 2020.
Hantavirus, which spreads primarily through rodents, carries a fatality rate that can reach 50% according to the World Health Organization. The outbreak has sparked comparisons to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly due to its connection to a cruise ship.
Moderna has recently been expanding beyond its declining COVID-19 vaccine business and focusing on its broader vaccine pipeline. The company recently raised its full-year outlook after stronger-than-expected earnings and growing demand for newer vaccines overseas. Earlier this year, European regulators also approved Moderna’s combined flu and COVID vaccine for adults over 50.
