âWaymo Recalls Nearly 3,800 Robotaxis After Software Bug Leads to Flood Incidentâ đ¨đ¨đ¨
Waymo, the autonomous driving unit of Alphabet Inc., is recalling 3,791 self-driving vehicles in the United States following a software issue that regulators say could pose a safety risk in extreme driving conditions.
The recall was triggered after an April 20 incident in San Antonio, where an unoccupied Waymo robotaxi drove into a flooded roadway. While no injuries were reported, the event prompted a broader internal review of how the autonomous system responds to standing water and similar environmental hazards.
According to a report cited by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the software flaw may allow vehicles to maintain excessive speeds when entering flooded or water-covered areas. That behavior increases the risk of loss of control, particularly in unpredictable road conditions where traction and visibility are already compromised.
The issue has raised renewed scrutiny over how autonomous driving systems handle âedge casesâ â rare but high-risk scenarios that are difficult to replicate in training data but can have serious safety consequences when they occur in real-world environments.
This recall comes amid a series of ongoing safety reviews involving Waymoâs self-driving fleet throughout 2026. Earlier this year, one of the companyâs vehicles was involved in an incident near a Santa Monica elementary school, and other reports have documented robotaxis failing to properly respond to stopped school buses â both of which intensified regulatory attention on autonomous vehicle behavior around pedestrians and school zones.
Despite these setbacks, Waymo continues to scale rapidly. As of early 2026, the company operates roughly 3,000 robotaxis across about 10 major U.S. metropolitan areas, completing more than 500,000 paid rides per week. That scale makes it one of the largest commercial autonomous ride-hailing services currently operating on public roads.
The recall underscores the growing tension between rapid deployment and safety validation in the autonomous vehicle industry. While companies like Waymo have made significant technical progress in real-world driving, regulators are increasingly focused on ensuring systems can reliably handle rare but dangerous edge conditions â especially as fleets expand into denser and more complex urban environments.
The incident is likely to add pressure on Alphabetâs autonomous division as it balances aggressive expansion with heightened scrutiny from federal safety agencies and public concerns over trust in driverless technology.
