âTesla Robotaxi Expansion Faces Reality Check as Early Texas Rollout Draws Scrutinyâ đ¨đ¨đ¨
A new Reuters report is casting doubt on the pace and scale of Tesla, Inc.âs highly anticipated Robotaxi expansion in Texas, suggesting that the service remains far closer to experimental testing than a fully deployed commercial rollout.
The report comes roughly a month after Tesla announced its autonomous ride-hailing service had expanded into Houston and Dallas. However, according to Reutersâ findings, the system is still operating in what appears to be a âbeta-testing phase,â with extremely limited vehicle availability and inconsistent real-world performance.
Limited Availability and Long Wait Times
Reporters attempting to use the service described significant operational delays. In one case, a ride request resulted in a nearly two-hour wait for a Robotaxi to arrive â despite the trip itself being only about a 20-minute drive.
Even when vehicles did arrive, performance issues persisted. Riders reportedly experienced indirect routing and drop-offs located up to a 15-minute walk from their intended destinations, raising questions about navigation accuracy and real-world usability.
Data tracked by independent observers also suggests extremely limited fleet presence. In the past week, only a single driverless Robotaxi was reportedly active in Dallas, while Houston showed just three available vehicles. That contrasts sharply with the impression of a broad market rollout.
Driverless Claims vs. Reality on the Ground
While Tesla initially framed the Texas expansion as a meaningful step forward in its autonomous ride-hailing ambitions, the current deployment appears closer to controlled testing than full commercial service.
In fact, even in existing markets such as Austin and parts of the Bay Area, many rides still reportedly include safety monitors, underscoring that full end-to-end autonomy remains limited in practice.
Language Shift Around Expansion Plans
The report also highlights a subtle but notable change in Teslaâs communication strategy. In earlier statements, the company indicated plans to expand Robotaxi services into roughly half a dozen additional markets in the first half of the year. More recent language, however, has shifted to describing those markets as having âpreparations underway,â suggesting a more cautious rollout timeline.
Robotaxis at the Center of Teslaâs Valuation Story
The Robotaxi program remains a critical pillar of Teslaâs long-term narrative. The companyâs valuation increasingly hinges not just on electric vehicle sales, but on its ambitions in artificial intelligence, autonomy, and large-scale fleet automation.
For investors, the Texas rollout highlights a key tension: the gap between long-term autonomous driving promises and the slower, more incremental reality of deploying safe and reliable driverless systems at scale.
As scrutiny increases, the success of Teslaâs Robotaxi strategy will likely depend on whether it can move beyond limited pilot deployments and demonstrate consistent, scalable performance in real-world urban environments.
