âResearchers Reportedly Used Anthropicâs Mythos AI to Crack macOS Securityâ đ¨đ¨đ¨
A new report from The Wall Street Journal claims researchers using a preview version of Anthropicâs unreleased Mythos AI model successfully took control of a Mac computer, raising fresh concerns about the cybersecurity risks tied to advanced AI systems.
According to the report, the researchers were able to exploit vulnerabilities in Appleâs macOS by chaining together multiple bugs that corrupted the systemâs memory. The process reportedly took two experienced security researchers five days to complete, showing that significant human expertise was still required.
The researchers emphasized that Mythos could not independently carry out the attack on its own and described some of the public hype surrounding the modelâs cyber capabilities as âoverblown.â Still, the demonstration is being viewed as a major example of how next-generation AI models could accelerate sophisticated hacking and vulnerability discovery.
Apple reportedly said it is taking the bug report âvery seriouslyâ but has not yet released a fix for the vulnerabilities involved.
The incident comes as AI companies race to build increasingly powerful models capable of coding, automation, and advanced reasoning. While these tools can boost productivity and security research, experts warn they could also become powerful weapons in cyber warfare if misused.
The report is likely to intensify the growing debate around AI safety, cybersecurity oversight, and how companies should control access to highly capable models.
