āElon Musk Predicts Tesla Robotaxis Will Be āWidespreadā Across the US by Year-Endā šØ
Elon Musk is once again making bold predictions about autonomous driving, saying Tesla Robotaxis could become āwidespreadā across the United States before the end of 2026.
Speaking remotely at the Smart Mobility Summit in Tel Aviv, Musk claimed Tesla already has fully autonomous vehicles operating in three Texas cities without safety drivers or human monitors inside the cars.
The statement marks a noticeable shift from Muskās more cautious tone during Teslaās recent earnings call, where he emphasized a slower and more careful rollout strategy for the Robotaxi platform.
Teslaās Robotaxi expansion so far has been significantly more gradual than many investors initially expected. While the company launched the service nearly a year ago, most of its fleet still relies on supervised Full Self-Driving technology with humans sitting behind the wheel.
Recent tracking data suggests only a small portion of Teslaās Robotaxis are currently operating fully unsupervised. In Austin, approximately 12 of the companyās 40 Robotaxis have reportedly been seen driving without safety operators during the past week, while Dallas and Houston each have only a handful of active autonomous vehicles.
Meanwhile, Alphabet subsidiary Waymo has already deployed more than 3,000 fully driverless vehicles across multiple US cities, giving it a major operational lead in the autonomous ride-hailing race.
Despite the slower rollout, Musk remains extremely bullish on the long-term future of self-driving technology. He predicted that within the next five to ten years, artificial intelligence could control roughly 90% of all miles driven globally.
Tesla investors continue to view Robotaxis as one of the companyās biggest long-term opportunities, with many believing autonomous ride-hailing could eventually transform Tesla from an automaker into a massive AI and transportation platform.
However, skepticism remains high on Wall Street due to Teslaās history of aggressive autonomous driving timelines that have repeatedly faced delays.
For now, the race between Tesla and Waymo is becoming one of the most important battles in the future of AI-powered transportation.
