âSoftBank Surges as OpenAI IPO Buzz Ignites Investor Optimismâ đ¨đ¨đ¨
SoftBank Group shares exploded higher in Tokyo trading, marking the companyâs biggest single-day rally since 2000 as excitement around potential IPOs tied to both OpenAI and SoftBankâs own energy infrastructure business fueled investor enthusiasm.
US-listed ADRs of SoftBank also climbed sharply after reports surfaced that OpenAI could confidentially file for an IPO as early as this week, potentially setting up one of the most anticipated public listings in tech history by September.
SoftBank has become one of OpenAIâs largest financial backers, aggressively increasing its exposure to the AI powerhouse. According to company filings, SoftBankâs cumulative investment in OpenAI has reached $34.6 billion, with the stake now valued at nearly $80 billion â representing roughly $45 billion in unrealized gains.
The possible IPO is seen as a major test for OpenAI as competition across the artificial intelligence industry intensifies. Rivals like Anthropic continue attracting massive investor interest, with reports suggesting Anthropic could soon secure a valuation even higher than OpenAIâs.
At the same time, SoftBank received another boost after SB Energy â the digital infrastructure and clean energy company backed by SoftBank and Ares Management â confirmed plans for its own confidential filing tied to a major US public offering.
Together, the developments strengthened investor confidence in billionaire founder Masayoshi Son and his aggressive AI investment strategy.
The rally also highlights a broader shift in market sentiment around SoftBank. For years, investors questioned the companyâs high-risk bets on emerging technology firms. But with AI demand accelerating globally and OpenAI positioned at the center of the boom, SoftBankâs portfolio is increasingly being viewed as one of the most strategically valuable collections of AI assets in the world.
SoftBank shares are now up 37% year-to-date as investors bet that upcoming IPOs could unlock billions in liquidity and further validate the companyâs long-term AI vision.
