ā€œDollar General Posts Earnings Beat but Revenue Miss, Stock Slides Despite Raised Outlookā€ 🚨🚨🚨

Dollar General Corporation delivered a mixed first-quarter report, pairing an earnings beat and improved full-year profit guidance with a slight miss on revenue expectations.

For the quarter, the company reported earnings per share of $2.00, ahead of analyst estimates of $1.90. However, revenue came in at $10.79 billion, slightly below the $10.83 billion consensus forecast.

Same-store sales rose 2% year over year, reflecting modest but steady demand across the company’s discount retail footprint.

Despite the earnings strength, shares slipped more than 2% in early trading, reversing earlier premarket gains as investors weighed the softer top-line performance against broader concerns about consumer spending.

The company did, however, raise its full-year profit outlook. Dollar General now expects fiscal 2026 earnings per share between $7.20 and $7.45, up from prior guidance of $7.10 to $7.35. It also reaffirmed its same-store sales growth forecast of 2.2% to 2.7%.

CEO Todd Vasos said the results were driven by positive customer traffic and balanced category performance, noting that the retailer’s essential product mix and large store footprint position it well in a challenging macroeconomic environment.

Still, the mixed reaction highlights ongoing pressure in the discount retail sector, where consumers are becoming more selective amid inflation concerns, higher energy costs, and broader economic uncertainty.

Some analysts point to shifting household behavior — including trade-down effects and reduced discretionary spending — as key factors influencing results across value-focused retailers.

Year to date, Dollar General shares remain under pressure, down more than 20%, reflecting investor caution about the durability of consumer demand in the lower-income retail segment.

The quarter underscores a familiar dynamic: even when discount retailers beat earnings expectations, the market is increasingly focused on revenue momentum and forward consumer strength rather than bottom-line performance alone.
