ā€œUS Soccer Hits Historic Viewership Record — But Super Bowl Still Rules American Sportsā€šŸšØšŸšØšŸšØ

The United States men’s national soccer team made history despite a disappointing result on the field, as its matchup against Belgium became the most-watched soccer broadcast in U.S. history.

The highly anticipated match drew an estimated 40 million viewers across Fox and Telemundo, setting a new record for American soccer audiences. The massive audience came after a perfect storm of storylines: a strong group-stage performance, a dominant win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32, and increased national attention surrounding the tournament.

Even though the USMNT ultimately fell 4-1 to Belgium, American fans showed that soccer’s popularity continues to grow. The audience surpassed the previous U.S. soccer record of 36.2 million viewers, set during the team’s earlier knockout-stage match.

However, despite reaching a historic milestone, soccer still has a long way to go before challenging America’s biggest sporting events.

The Super Bowl remains in another universe when it comes to television dominance. The NFL’s championship game regularly attracts more than 100 million viewers, making it one of the largest annual sporting events on the planet. The biggest soccer audience in U.S. history still represented less than one-third of a typical Super Bowl audience.

The numbers highlight both the challenge and the opportunity for soccer in America. While the sport has historically played second fiddle to football, basketball, and baseball, interest has surged thanks to increased investment, global stars, the growth of Major League Soccer, and major international tournaments being hosted in the United States.

With future events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted across North America, soccer is positioned for another major growth opportunity. More Americans are watching, younger generations are embracing the sport, and broadcasters are investing heavily in bringing the game to a larger audience.

The record-breaking USMNT audience proves that soccer has officially entered the mainstream conversation in America — but surpassing the NFL’s cultural dominance remains the ultimate championship goal.
