“Meta announced that all teen accounts on Instagram will now automatically be set to a PG-13 content restriction by default”🚨
Meta (META $713.51, -0.31%) is rolling out a major update to how teens experience Instagram, introducing new content guidelines inspired by the Motion Picture Association’s PG-13 standard — a familiar benchmark in the movie industry.
Under the new policy, all users under the age of 18 will automatically have their accounts set to a PG-13 content limit by default. This move is part of Meta’s broader effort to create a safer digital environment for younger users amid growing concerns about social media’s impact on teen mental health.
Parents who manage their child’s account through Instagram’s parental supervision tools will be able to adjust settings manually, including switching to a more restrictive level if they choose. However, Meta recognizes the ongoing challenge of teens using fake birthdays to bypass age restrictions.
To address that, Instagram will deploy “age prediction technology” — a system that analyzes user behavior and signals to estimate a person’s true age and apply the appropriate content filters.
In its announcement, Meta admitted that no system is perfect, and some inappropriate content may still slip through. However, the company insists this new approach is a meaningful step toward ensuring that teens see content aligned with their age group.
