Nvidia Soars After Announcing $100B OpenAI Investment to Fuel Data Center Growth🚨🚨🚨
Nvidia stock rallied nearly 4% Monday, climbing to $182.58, after the chipmaker unveiled plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI as part of a massive data center expansion.
The announcement came during a joint appearance on CNBC by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Huang explained that the investment would be rolled out gradually, tied to each gigawatt of new capacity brought online.
Together, the two companies intend to build an unprecedented 10 gigawatts of AI computing power over the next several years. Huang described the undertaking as “the biggest AI infrastructure project in history” and “the largest computing project in history.”
To put the scale in perspective, 10 gigawatts of energy could supply the average electricity needs of about 8 million U.S. households—roughly the population of New York City. The project will rely heavily on Nvidia’s GPUs, with Huang noting that it would involve 4 to 5 million units, about equal to the company’s annual shipments this year and double last year’s output.
The first phase of the buildout, using Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin platform, is expected to go live in the second half of 2026. Final details of the initiative are expected in the coming weeks.
