âBeyond Meatâs Unreal Comeback: Stock Skyrockets 1,200%, But Can Hype Save a Struggling Businessâ đ¨đ¨đ¨
Itâs never easy to define what truly makes a âmeme stock.â Sure, the classic ingredients are there â retail investor enthusiasm, surging options activity, and wild price swings â but the full recipe often includes a few unexpected extras: heavy short interest, a dash of nostalgia, and a stock price that feels âcheap enoughâ to gamble on.
What the company actually does? Thatâs often beside the point. Whether itâs video games, real estate tech, or even doughnuts â if retail traders rally around it, itâs meme-worthy.
The latest company to get swept up in the frenzy is Beyond Meat (BYND) â a brand that once symbolized the future of food, now suddenly reborn as a market sensation. Shares of the faux-meat maker have exploded more than 1,200% since October 16, including a jaw-dropping 128% jump on Monday, followed by another 146% surge Tuesday, and a further triple-digit leap early Wednesday. Redditâs r/wallstreetbets is buzzing once again, fueled by chatter of a short squeeze and excitement over Beyond Meatâs new distribution deal with Walmart.
According to Bloomberg, as of early Wednesday morning, Beyond Meat was trading more volume premarket than any other stock in the U.S. â by a wide margin. Its turnover hit $1.5 billion, outpacing Tesla by 11 times and Nvidia by 16 times. In total, nearly $6 billion in trading volume moved through BYND shares on Tuesday alone.
The mania follows a debt-swap deal that heavily diluted shareholders but also drew the attention of retail traders and influencers on YouTube who saw an opportunity for a dramatic turnaround â or at least, a short squeeze worth betting on.
But the real question is whether Beyond Meat can turn meme-fueled momentum into something sustainable. History offers a cautionary tale: the original meme stock, GameStop, managed to capitalize on its viral fame by selling new shares and building a cash-rich balance sheet. Whether Beyond Meat can pull off a similar transformation remains to be seen.
For now, the stock is sizzling â but investors would be wise to remember that meme-fueled heat often burns out just as fast as it catches fire.
