âLucid Motors Partners With NVIDIA to Develop Level 4 Autonomous SUV, Shares Briefly Jump Before Fadingâ đ¨đ¨đ¨
Shares of Lucid Group (LCID) spiked more than 6% Tuesday afternoon before retreating to close down 0.58% at $18.00, after the luxury EV maker announced a landmark partnership with NVIDIA (NVDA) to bring Level 4 autonomous driving to its upcoming vehicles. NVIDIA shares climbed 5.23% to $201.51, hitting fresh highs on a wave of partnership announcements at the companyâs GTC conference in Washington, D.C.
Lucid revealed that its next-generation midsized SUV, slated for release in 2026, will feature advanced lidar and radar systems powered by NVIDIAâs AI-driven DRIVE platform. The automaker described its ambition as creating âthe first true eyes-off, hands-off, and mind-off (L4) consumer-owned autonomous vehicle.â
Level 4 autonomy represents a major leap forward â vehicles equipped with this technology can operate entirely without human input under most conditions, similar to Waymoâs robotaxi fleet currently operating in select U.S. cities.
In addition to the future SUV, the partnership will also extend to Lucidâs flagship Gravity SUV, which will gain enhanced automated features and next-gen driver-assistance capabilities developed in tandem with NVIDIA.
The collaboration underscores Lucidâs push to expand beyond luxury EV performance and into full autonomy, leveraging NVIDIAâs AI ecosystem to deliver a consumer-grade self-driving experience once limited to experimental or commercial fleets.
âLucidâs goal has always been to merge elegance, performance, and intelligence,â the company said in a statement. âPartnering with NVIDIA allows us to bring that intelligence to a new level â one where the driver truly becomes a passenger.â
Analysts say the move positions Lucid to compete more directly with Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, and Waymo, all of which are racing to commercialize advanced driver-assistance systems.
While investor enthusiasm was evident in early trading, some analysts warned that regulatory, technical, and cost challenges could make consumer-ready Level 4 vehicles years away from mass adoption.
Still, the announcement reflects how NVIDIA continues to extend its dominance beyond computing into the automotive AI sector, powering the next generation of intelligent and autonomous mobility.
